About lynx hunting

Lynx hunting is Norway's most exclusive form of hunting. It takes place only during a short period in winter, and only when the authorities open quota hunting based on population assessments.

The hunt is conducted with dogs that find and follow lynx tracks in the snow. When the dog trees the lynx or bays it in the terrain, the hunter approaches for a controlled shot.

It is demanding hunting in deep snow and cold weather. Good physical fitness and good dogs are essential. Many lynx hunters use specialized dogs trained specifically for this purpose.

Calibers 6.5x55 or .308 are common. Shot distance is often short, under 50 meters.

Hunting Season

1 Feb – 31 Mar

Lynx hunting requires a quota allocated by the regional carnivore board. The season opens only if the population is above the management target. A licence is required.

Weight

Live weight: 15–30 kg. Carcass weight approx. 55%.

Distribution

The lynx is found in forested areas across Norway, but the densest population is in Trøndelag, Innlandet and Northern Norway. It lives at low density and is hard to observe.

Terrain

Coniferous and mixed forest in hilly terrain. The lynx is a stalking predator that uses cover in the terrain to get close to its prey.

Identification

Yellowish-brown with dark spots. Short tail with a black tip. Ear tufts and powerful paws.

Hunting Tips

Follow the carnivore board's quota decisions. Lynx hunting requires good tracking snow and specialised dogs.
