About the hunt
European Red Stag Rut Hunt
Red deer are the wild heart of our country. They live wherever there is forest and hill, in almost every hunting ground we have. In the rut the woods are full of their calls. The sound carries all day through the trees and over the ridges, and you move by your ears and the wind, the hunt sharp and simple in your mind. Winter is different.
The land is bare and hard and the snow shows every track. The stags gather in big herds on their wintering grounds, dark shapes on the white fields. You watch them from the edge of the forest, your breath cold in your chest, and you feel the country stripped to its bone, honest and clear.
