Moose are found across all of mainland Norway, but the densest populations are in Innlandet, Trøndelag and Nordland. In the western coastal counties the population is thinner but growing.

Moose live in coniferous and mixed forest, often near bogs and watercourses. In summer they browse in lush hillsides and along streams. In autumn they often move down to lower-lying forest.

Live weight: cow approx. 280–400 kg, bull approx. 380–600 kg (the largest up to 700 kg). Carcass weight approx. 55% of live weight.

The coast is mild and wet with lush forest, while the interior has large mountain areas. Hardangervidda in the east is Europe's largest high mountain plateau. Vestland has Norway's densest red deer population.
