About shooting eurasian wigeon

The wigeon is one of the most common migratory ducks in Norway, and hunting is best during the autumn migration in September and October. Large flocks can gather on coastal meadows and in shallow bays.

Hunting is done as stand hunting, typically along the coast where wigeons graze on grass meadows near the sea. Decoys can be used effectively.

The male wigeon has a distinctive whistling call that carries far. You often hear the flock before you see it.

Open Season

21 Aug – 23 Dec

Weight

500–900 g

Distribution

The wigeon breeds scattered across mountain areas and plateaus throughout Norway. During the autumn migration, large flocks gather along the coast and at lowland lakes.

Terrain

Mountain lakes and bogs in summer. During migration it grazes on salt marshes and shallow bays along the coast. The wigeon is a grazing duck often found on land.

Identification

The male has a chestnut head with a yellow forehead. The female is brownish. Both show a white wing patch in flight.

Fieldcraft Tips

Best during the autumn migration. Search along the coast and on salt marshes. Wigeon often graze on land and are easier to approach than many other ducks.
